What students study

The arts train perception and discipline the imagination. Studio practice, music, performance, and creative writing are not electives on the margin here — they are part of how a student learns to look closely, to listen carefully, and to make something of what they notice. Work in the arts runs alongside academic study, and students present and perform regularly, learning that a finished piece is the result of many small, patient choices.

Mathematics and the sciences are taught from first principles, with an emphasis on proof and genuine understanding over memorization. Students do not merely learn that a method works; they learn why it works. From the logic of a proof to the behavior of a reaction, the department treats every subject as a way of asking honest questions about the world and checking the answers. Laboratory work begins early and runs throughout, so that students learn science the way scientists do — by asking questions, running experiments, and checking the results.

The humanities are the heart of a Veritas education. Here students learn to read closely, to write plainly, and to follow an argument wherever it leads. Through literature, history, philosophy, and the study of Latin and modern languages, students come to understand not only what people have thought across the centuries, but how they thought it — and how to join that long conversation themselves. Classes are small and discussion-based; the work is slow and deliberate, because careful reading cannot be rushed.

The social sciences give students the tools to understand people and societies — how decisions are made, how institutions behave, and how evidence is gathered. Through economics, government, psychology, and research methods, students learn to read data skeptically, to ask better questions, and to hold an opinion only as firmly as the reasons for it. The department prizes honest inquiry over confident answers.
